Protesters repeatedly stop train carrying coal to power plant

HOOKSETT, N.H. (AP) — Climate activists tried to block carrying coal to Merrimack Power Plant in Bow, New Hampshire in three separate cities over the weekend.

Protesters from climate activist organizations Groups from the Climate Disobedience Center and 350 New Hampshire temporarily stopped the train at several points along its route to the power plant. They protested the coal-carrying train in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Saturday, in Ayer, Massachusetts, Sunday, and Hooksett, New Hampshire, on Sunday.

“We’re here today because the climate crisis is happening right now. It’s affecting families in New Hampshire right now, and our elected officials have completely failed to do anything, so we are here,” protester Lila Kohrman-Glaser told WMUR-TV. “We’re no longer going to stand idly by while coal is used in New Hampshire. We’re taking a stand and stopping the delivery of coal to Bow.”

Several arrests for trespassing were made in Ayer, according to authorities. Several people were also arrested in Hooksett on similar charges, according to an organizer with 350 New Hampshire.

The coal power plant has greatly reduced its carbon footprint and only runs during the winter when there is a large demand for natural gas, according to Granite Shore Power, the company that runs the plant.
