WINDSOR — Windsor blasted out of the gates with a 10-0 run against Newport and never looked back in the season opener for both teams. With the Yellow Jackets in full court press mode, it was Owen Abrahamsen who provided the firepower as he dropped in 8 of the first 10 Windsor points to give Windsor a comfortable 29-12 lead after 8 minutes.
“That Windsor team has a bunch of weapons and they can really put the ball in the hole,” said Newport’s second year coach Bill Page. “It’s early and we will improve.”
Windsor’s up tempo game forced the Tigers into a running match through the first half and limited the Tigers to nearly 6 minutes without a hoop in the second quarter until Will Cross swished a three pointer for Newport as Windsor led 47-19 at the break.
“We started out strong tonight and did some things right,” said Windsor head coach Harry Ladue. “It’s our first game and it’s always nice to grab a win the first time out.”
Newport’s David Hutchinson nailed back to back hoops to open the final quarter but the Windsor bench responded to finish off things with a 15-10 4th quarter advantage as Windsor would outscore the Tigers in each quarter to close out the night with a solid 78-40 win.
Windsor’s Abrahamsen would lead all scorers with 22 points while John Cook III would add 15 points on the hot shooting of 5 three pointers. Ethan Lawyer chipped in 13 points. Newport was led by Cross, who would finish with 17 points, and Hutchinson added 9 points.
In JV action, Larry Dougher’s Windsor team would open their season with a 67-25 win over Newport’s first year JV coach Bryan Martin’s squad.
