MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Police in New Hampshire’s largest city will be wearing body cameras by the end of the month.
Manchester Police Chief Carlo Capano told New Hampshire Public Radio that he hopes the new technology will improve transparency and public trust. The cameras will record both audio and video when officers interact with civilians.
Capano says the cameras will help with looking into complaints against his department.
“It’s going to put everyone on an equal playing field,” Capano said. “So the officers will be able to have their side from the recordings. And the civilian making the complaint would have their side from the recording.”
Officers will be required to notify civilians when they are recording. Members of the public can refuse to be recorded in their own homes, or anywhere someone would have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
