LANGDON — It took the Cardinals a while but once they found the gas pedal, they outraced Mascoma to open the MG Sports Holiday Tournament with a 54-36 win.

Stevens started a little sluggish but pushed the lead as high as 14-9 after the first quarter behind the dominating games from Alyssa Paquette, Abigail Farro and Zahna Rice in the paint. The much taller Cardinals couldn’t shake the pesky Royals as Nicole Williams and Michaela Dowd provided just enough offense for Mascoma as the Cardinals went ice cold. Mascoma would tie the game at 17-17 when Liberti LaCasse drilled a hoop to end the half. “ We were in a funk in the first half, we talked about being patient at half time and we shot our way to a lead over the next two quarters,” said Stevens coach Ivy Condon.

As Stevens began to open up some breathing room, it wasn’t until Molly Derosier’s buzzer beater from downtown to end the third quarter that gave the Cardinals a spark revved up the Stevens offense. The Cardinals would light the scoreboard up for 24 forth quarter points behind the shooting of Sydney Miller(8-points in the final frame) and Jaci Morin during a 13-0 run that put the game out of reach. “ We played patient and as a young team we are still growing our confidence, we had a couple of days off but we’re in basketball mode now, it was a good win against a determined Mascoma team today,” said Condon.

Miller would lead a balanced Stevens attack with 12 points followed by Morin and Paquette’s 10 points each while Rice would throw down 8 points. Mascoma was led by Dowd’s 11 points.

FM 74-Hillsboro-Deering 25

The Wildcats have been waiting for a week to play a game because of postponements and today they came out hungry. Hitting on their first 5 shots, FM opened up a huge 28-2 lead after 8 minutes and coasted the rest of the way on Thursday.

With 8 different players putting points on the scoreboard early, Matt Baird-Torney went deep into his bench as everyone saw plenty of action today. Avery Stewart, Makenna Grillone, Erin Brady all found the bottom of the net right off the bat as the Wildcat press overwhelmed the HD squad. “ We’ve been off for so long I was worried how we would react to the long layoff but we found our stride early and had a chance to throttle things back a bit as the game wore on,” said Barid-Torney. Morgan Beaureguard and Shea Pickering were thieves during the FM press, picking the pockets of HD as the FM defense was rock solid.

Brady would lead the way for FM with 12 points and Bardis added 11 while Nora Dunnigan kicked in with 10 points.

Games will continue on Friday as Stevens will play Hinsdale at 1:00 followed by FM vs Littleton at 2:30. Mascoma and Hillsboro-Deering will tip things off on Friday at 11:30 am. The championship 2:30 and consolation games 1:00 will be played on Saturday.
