Freezing rain that moved across the region Friday morning sent cars and trucks sliding. On the Maine Turnpike, a jack-knifed trailer during the morning commute brought southbound traffic to a standstill.
Speed limits were reduced on the turnpike and I-295 because of the slippery conditions.
The tractor-trailer blocked traffic in in the town of Gray. Other minor crashes were reported.
In Vermont, icy road conditions are being blamed for a series of crashes on U.S. Route 5 in the town of Coventry that began when two trucks collided, blocking the roadway. The driver of one of the trucks was hospitalized with head and leg injuries.
In New Hampshire, a state Department of Transportation plow loaded with salt hit an icy patch of road early Friday in Bedford and overturned, WMUR-TV reports. Meanwhile, a tractor-trailer rolled over in Madbury on Friday. The plow driver was not injured but the tractor-trailer driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The freezing rain moved into Maine just in time for the morning commute but won’t linger, said Eric Schwibs of the National Weather Service. Temperatures were expected to climb to 40 for much of the state.
