Newport Senior Center News: Dec. 28

We had a lot of Christmas surprises this past week and we sure do hope all of our readers had some Christmas surprises they could enjoy as well. Now, we are heading towards the end of 2019. But every ending has a new beginning.

When we begin 2020, the Newport Senior Center will be offering Yoga classes each Monday starting on Monday, Jan. 6. Yoga has many benefits that help increase strength to flexibility to heart health. To learn more about the additional benefits of yoga, search online on the computers in our very own computer lab. Classes will be held downstairs from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and will be $5 per class. Classes are open to the public.

The computer lab is open Monday through Friday during our normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free Wi-Fi is available for those who would like to use their own personal electronics and is just one of the great free services offered to our members.

The Newport Senior Center offers many free opportunities for its members and other beneficial activities at a minimal fee. We are only able to provide these numerous opportunities if we are able to hold successful fundraisers throughout the year that help with the routine maintenance and normal cost of running the center.

In addition to fundraising, we do have annual membership dues. The yearly membership dues are $10 for the entire year. However, this very low-cost membership is good until Jan 31. Any dues paid after Jan. 31 will be $15 per year.

Another great new activity will be held on Jan. 12 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Join us for a cornhole tournament and potluck luncheon. This event is open to anyone who would like to participate in good times and good food with good friends. A snow date of Jan. 26 is scheduled in the event of inclement weather on Jan. 12.

SCNS is in the process of obtaining donated items for our Annual Basket of Burning Love raffle. We do know that we have a bottle of wine, stuffed animal and valentines signs for the basket thus far. Keep your eyes and ears open to see what else we can fill the basket with. This is another exciting raffle that everyone enjoys.

The Newport Senior Center will also be planning for their famous breakfast in February. Donations towards the breakfast and volunteers will be needed as the center participates in Newport’s Winter Carnival.

If you made a New Year’s Resolution to give back in 2020, consider the Newport Senior Center or Sullivan County Nutrition Services. There are numerous areas where volunteer help can be used.

You can choose one fundraising activity to commit to this year or help once per week registering guests when they join us for lunch. If you would like to learn more about some exciting volunteer opportunities, please call 863-3177.

We look forward to hearing from some new volunteers this year and continuing to work with our dedicated volunteers. Volunteer where you make a difference in the life of others, volunteer with us!
