NEWPORT — An 80-year-old Newport man died from injuries he sustained in a fatal pedestrian collision with an SUV on Saturday night, according to the Newport Police Department.

On Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7:25 p.m., Newport Police, EMT and Fire Rescue personnel responded to a motor vehicle collision with a pedestrian on North Main Street near Yoshi’s Convenience Store, according to Newport Police Chief James Burroughs in a press release.

Burroughs said that Carlton Barton was struck by a 2008 Ford Escape while crossing North Main Street after leaving Yoshi’s Convenience Store. Barton sustained severe injuries and was transported to Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Jamie Fodiani, 33, of Newport was the driver of the vehicle that collided with Barton. The investigation found that neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the collision and that Barton was not utilizing a crosswalk at the time of the incident.

The collision remains under investigation by the Newport Accident Reconstruction team.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is encouraged to contact the Newport Police Department, specifically Lt. Craig Robertson, at (603) 863-3232.
