Windsor — Windsor hung tough against a very good Brattleboro team for a bit but there was just too much offense to control as the Division 1 Colonels flexed their muscles for a convincing 74-39 win on Monday.
John Cook III’s free throw put Windsor ahead early but that was short lived as Greg Fitzgerald’s monster game came to life as Brattleboro erupted for an 11-2 run and closed out the first 8 minutes with a 20-12 lead.
Caden Lockwood was a beast in the paint for Windsor but there were too many answers from the visitors as they crashed the boards in waves to out-muscle the undermanned Yellow Jackets to grow their lead at the half to 36-20. “ Our defense was key tonight and we executed well on both ends of the court, we were a focused team this evening and our transition game was spot on,” said Brattleboro coach Jason Coplan after the game and called tonight’s win” one of our better efforts of the year”.
With Owen Abrahamsen sidelined with an ankle injury, Windsor had trouble generating offense as drives to the hoop by Jordan Place and Jackson Davis were met with a wall of defenders and a swarming man-to-man defense.
The Colonel’s disrupted any Windsor offensive attack with a solid on-the-ball defense while on the other end it rained three pointers as Sam Mattocks knocked down 4 shots in a row from beyond the arc in the final quarter to cap a big Brattleboro win, 74-39.
Windsor rarely got any second-chance shots as the visitors crashed the boards had all night and connected on multiple second opportunities on their own end.
“ We just ran into a buzz-saw tonight against a good Brattleboro team, we will learn from this game and get ready for the next one,” said Windsor head coach Harry Ladue.
Lockwood led the way for Windsor with 10 points followed by Place and Cook III with 6 points each. For Brattleboro it was Fitzgerald’s 28 points to lead all scorers followed by Mattocks and Charlie Galance who both dropped in 14 points each.
In a thrilling JV contest, a last-second shot by Brattleboro went in and out to give Windsor a 60-57 win. Windsor had 4 players with double digit scoring as Maison Fortin led the way with 19 points followed by Austin Gould’s 13, Kaleb Sweet’s 12 and Travis McAllister’s 10 points. Brattleboro was led by Giorgi’s 15 points and Stephan Haskin’s 12.
Windsor(2-4) will host Division 2 Hartford(3-3) on Thursday at 7pm.
