New Hampshire’s 2 largest cities see drop in overdoses

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — New statistics released Wednesday show a drop in overdoses in New Hampshire’s largest city over the last two years.

The data shows that Manchester had 877 overdoses in 2017, and 569 in 2019. That’s a 35% drop over a two-year span.

The data shows that Nashua had a drop over the last year, with 314 overdoses in 2018 and 265 in 2019.

The numbers do, however, show a slight increase in overdose deaths in the state’s two largest cities. The cities had a combined 87 overdose deaths in 2018, and 94 last year. The 2019 figure is still lower than the peak of 134 deaths in 2016.

The data showed an increase in the use of Narcan, an overdose antidote.

“Reported public Narcan use continued to rise indicating widespread availability and familiarity with its intended use and effectiveness,” Chris Stawasz, AMR regional director, told WMUR-TV.
