Cosmos log impressive performances at Dartmouth Relays

The Springfield High School Indoor Track and Field Club competed in the 51st annual Dartmouth Relays held at Leverone Fieldhouse in Hanover, NH on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 11 and 12. The elite event attracts over 2,000 athletes from as far away as Ohio, Maryland, and Canada. They must meet strict entry qualifications, making it an honor just to compete there, especially in the championship rounds.

Senior Cadence Wheeler, who set Vermont Indoor Records last year in Long Jump and Triple Jump, returned to top form Sunday after a preseason injury. Wheeler made the championship finals and placed 3rd overall in Triple Jump (42’10”) and 5th overall in Long Jump (20’10”). His 8 points propelled the Cosmos to a tie at 28th out of over 50 teams, some of whom did not score.

In running events, Senior Maddy O’Brien ran the girls’ 55m dash (8.44), as did Max Leninski (7.12), and Brady Clark (7.34) for the boys. Clark also ran the 300m (43.94).

Senior Kayden Huntley ran a Personal Record in the boys’ 600m (1:42.18), and junior Molly Leonard ran her season’s best in that event (2:01.93). Freshman Damian Stagner improved his PR in the 1Km run by 5 seconds, to 3:13.21.

In girls’ field events, Junior Haley Gibbons placed 16th overall in the championship round of the triple jump, with a season’s best 29’5.75”. She also hit 13’4” in the long jump.

Junior Skyler Congdon and sophomore Isabella Belisle represented the Cosmos in girls’ Weight-throw, with Congdon hitting a PR of 24’3.25”, and Belisle a season’s best 24’1.5”.

Overall it was the best performance Springfield has ever logged at the very competitive Dartmouth Relays.
