GM gallops to win over BF, 54-47

CHESTER — Green Mountain grabbed a big win over their neighbors from Bellows Falls in front of a great crowd.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Bellows Falls grabbing an early lead only to see it slip away behind the shooting of James Anderson for Green Mountain in the first quarter as GM led 13-9. The Terriers rode the hot hand of Isaac Wilkinson to grab the lead back and pushed it as high as 26-20, but a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Everett Mosher sliced that lead in half 26-23 at the break.

“I thought that shot before the half was the spark we needed and a big momentum boost for us,” said GM head coach Brian Rapanotti.

BF grabbed a 7-point lead as Dylan Clark and Wilkinson canned hoops off offensive rebounds then BF went cold, as in ice cold.

For the next 8 minutes, GM went on a tear with James Anderson knocking down 3 hoops and another buzzer beater from Dylan McCarthy to give the Chieftains a 44-30 lead after three quarters.

“We came out of the locker room and just clamped down and helped each other on every defensive possession,” said Ty Merrill.

That run continued into the final quarter as BF just couldn’t buy a hoop until Jon Terry’s bucket ended the drought from the field but GM was way ahead 48-33.

“We played a solid team game tonight against a good BF team, that run in the third quarter changed everything tonight,” said Anderson. BF made a 10-1 run towards the end of the game and cut the lead all the way down to 49-43 but McCarthy and Anderson made their free throws when they needed to hold off BF for a 54-47 win.

“With the lead, we shortened the game in the final quarter but BF kept coming and our free throws and patience on offense helped secure the win tonight,” said Rapanotti.

Anderson led all scorers tonight with 17 points while McCarthy added 12 points and Merrill chipped in with 10 of his own for GM. BF was led by Wilkinson’s 16 points.

In JV action it was BF downing GM 64-44. Curtis Turner poured in 31 points for BF while Kagan Hance dropped in 10 points for GM.

Bellows Falls (5-3) will head to Hartford on Saturday while Green Mountain (4-5) will host Woodstock on Tuesday.
