Weather Watch

A warm end of January

Let there be little or no doubt, January has been a strange weather month.

Ski areas had reason to cheer when a few inches of snow fell on their slopes. And a few days later it was followed by rain. During the current weather week there was no additional snow but rain showed up Saturday.

With warm temperatures predicted right through the end of January, area skating rinks took a beating for the second time this winter and for those who refuse to give up, they will start from scratch once again, the third time, this winter.

As warmer air moved in over New Hampshire, the high morning temperature around 6 a.m. one day was recorded at the Observatory on top of Mount Washington, a sign of what would be heading down into the New Hampshire valleys.

Once the rain pulled out during the night on Saturday, the sun was waiting in the wings to return on Sunday morning and it didn’t disappoint. The remainder of the last week of January is going to be sunny with no threats of bad weather or snowstorms. In fact, the surface snow on lawns and snow on roofs is going down rather quickly.

The forecast of sunny weather didn’t last for very long. It was sunny in the morning on Monday but in the afternoon clouds found their way into the valley and there were even a few minor periods of spitting snow. So much fo the sun.

At 11 a.m. on Sunday the temperature was 22 degrees at the summit (6,288 feet) of Mount Washington. At the same hour it was 39 down here in the valley.
