Weather Watch

A testy two days

Finally, much of New Hampshire got a sampling of winter Thursday and Friday, Feb. 6 and 7. There was rain, sleet, hail, wind and snow. Driving was generally horrible and schools in Sullivan County were shut down for two straight days, an unusual occurrence.

The snow was most welcome, however, by ski areas. Areas up north got up to a foot of new snow. Over the two days, Sullivan County picked up 5.5 inches of snow. Snow banks left by plows at the end of driveways iced up and had to be chopped up before they could be removed on Saturday morning.

Sunday’s morning low served as a wake-up call that winter is still hanging around. In Newport the low was minus 7. Some Sullivan County communities might have been lower or even higher, but it was still cold and frosty.

In Concord, where the official New Hampshire records are kept, reported a low temperature of 5 degrees Sunday morning and by 3 p.m. in the afternoon it was supposed to hit 29 degrees. Up north in Pittsburg, the Sunday morning low was minus 28 degrees, rather chilly by anyone’s standards.

There were still some slick spots Sunday morning on Sullivan County area highways from the two-day storm. Overnight on Sunday another inch of snow found Sullivan County.
