Report: Troopers’ use of deadly force justified

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Three state troopers who shot and wounded a man during a confrontation were justified in their use of deadly force, New Hampshire’s attorney general said.

In November, police in Ossipee arrived at the home of John Swanson, 53, to arrest him following prior confrontations he had with officers. He refused to come out of the house. A SWAT team was present.

Non-lethal gas rounds were thrown into the house. Attorney General Gordon MacDonald said Swanson came out with a loaded rifle, and that’s when the three troopers fired, wounding him in the shoulder, forearm, and buttocks. Swanson was hospitalized and survived. No one else was hurt.

Swanson has been charged with reckless conduct in connection with statements allegedly made to police, as well as gunshots police believe they heard coming from the house. His attorney declined to comment.
