Charles R. Holmes

Charles R. Holmes CLAREMONT — Charles R. Holmes, 90, formerly of West Pleasant Street in Claremont, New Hampshire, died Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, following a period of failing health. He was born in Potsdam, New York, on Dec. 3, 1929, the son of George L. and Dorothy (Griffin) Holmes, and had been a longtime Claremont resident. Charles was veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the Korean War. He held many jobs throughout his career which included a machinist at Joy Manufacturing Co., delivery driver for Merrimack Farmers Exchange and Table Talk Pie, bus driver for Community Transportation Services and in the maintenance department at Valley Regional Hospital. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports on television and cats and dogs. He was a former member of the American Legion Post #29 and the Claremont Elks Lodge #879. Charles was the widower of Joan M. (Belliveau) Holmes who died on Aug. 18, 2017. Members of his family include four daughters, Joanie Holmes, Jacksonville, Florida, Susan Walker Perkins and husband Doug, Claremont, New Hampshire, Patricia Fullam and husband Randy, Claremont, New Hampshire, Michele Costello and husband Rick, Goshen, New Hampshire; four sons, Charles Holmes Jr., Dorchester, Massachusetts, Michael Holmes and wife Kim, Gilbertville, Massachusetts, Peter Holmes and wife Julie, Jacksonville, Florida, Joseph Holmes and wife Jennifer, Hanover, Pennsylvnia; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Denise Cummings; a granddaughter, Robin Flaig; a sister, Jean Holmes; and a brother, George Holmes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at St. Mary’s Church with the Very Rev. Shawn M. Therrien, pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the Roy Funeral Home, 93 Sullivan St., Claremont, New Hampshire, on Monday evening from 6–8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Resident Benefits Fund, c/o NH Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276.
