Newport Senior Center News: March 7, 2020

The participants in the new cardio drumming class were having so much fun this week they were raising the floor and the roof off the Newport Senior Center. If you would like to see what this new exercise craze is all about, like us on Facebook at Newport Senior Center Home of Sullivan County Nutrition Services. The next class will be held Monday, March 16.

The Alzheimer’s Association will also be bringing a new discussion to the center on April 6, Effective Communication. Although this discussion panel may not be as fun as the cardio drumming, it is definitely a subject that impacts many families. The information discussed is important information on how to understand and communicate with a loved one diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. The Effective Communication Strategies program of the Alzheimer’s Association was designed to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia.

Mark your calendars now to join us on April 6 at the Newport Senior Center. The Alzheimer’s Association will be here from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to offer this free educational opportunity that you and your loved one will benefit from. Reserve your seat today by stopping by the center to sign-up.

As you hear more and more about the coronavirus, rest assure we are taking additional cleaning and sanitization precautions as we learn more about this virus. We continue to receive daily updates from the state and medical facilities and will do our best to give you accurate information as it comes in.

Any information received from the Department of Health and Human Services will be displayed at the front desk and delivered to Meals on Wheels participants. Please review the information and do your part as instructed. Working together is going to be the only way we can get through this difficult and scary situation.

We would like to remind people that yoga is still being offered each Monday at 1:15 p.m. The cost for the class is $5 per session. To learn more about yoga and its benefits, join us on Monday and talk to instructor Brianna Renner.

All of these activities and more could not happen without volunteers, fundraisers and donors. The board of directors would like to extend a special thank you to Hannaford Supermarket, Market Basket, McDonalds, Shaw’s and Aroma Joe’s for their donations for our fundraising events.
