Nursing assistant convicted of patient abuse

DOVER, N.H. (AP) — A former nursing assistant was convicted of simple assault and patient abuse for covering the mouth of a 92-year-old patient at a nursing center and recording it.

Nineteen-year-old Samantha Siegel, of Portsmouth, was convicted Thursday following a jury trial in Strafford County Superior Court. A lower court judge found her guilty of the misdemeanors last year, and she appealed.

Prosecutors said that in 2018, Siegel, who used to work at St. Ann’s Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Dover, made a video recording of herself putting her hand over the patient’s mouth to prevent the patient from speaking. Prosecutors said she placed a caption on the video that reads “when you can’t deal w(ith) the talking anymore.”

St. Ann’s learned about the recording, called Dover police, and terminated Siegel.

She’s scheduled to be sentenced on May 12.
