Thomas C. “Tommy” Hemphill

Thomas C. “Tommy” Hemphill CORNISH — Thomas Carl “Tommy” Hemphill of Cornish, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2020. Tommy was born Jan. 14, 1959, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. His parents, Richard and Phyllis Hemphill, cared for him at home all of their lives. Tommy was born with Down syndrome. While in many ways a disability, it also endowed him with the unique qualities his family and friends loved him for, his innate friendliness, his big smile and his joy of life. Tommy had an admirable openess and goodwill towards everyone he met. He greeted you with a smile, a joke or a compliment. As the youngest of four, he enjoyed the company of his siblings and sharing in their outdoor activities. He loved to shoot hoops or play badminton in the backyard. He looked forward to planting peas in “Springy” or raking leaves with his favorite red wheel barrow. He was always eager to help and took great pleasure in being recognized as a hard worker. He loved to laugh and his playfulness made every job entertaining. He was equally happy to relax in the sun with a cup of tea and an old car magazine when chores were done. He shared his passion for old cars and old TV shows with his brother, Rick (“Pal”). They spent many hours together looking at auto magazines, collecting models, tinkering in the garage or laughing over favorite sitcoms. He had an amazing memory for sitcoms and theme songs. He could imitate Herman Munster’s laugh or quote the Three Stooges. Tommy loved singing, dancing and music of all kinds, especially Johnny Cash. Tom would often ham it up by playing his harmonica or an air fiddle. For as much as he loved to laugh, he loved making others laugh even more. He was a wonderful person who made our lives warmer and he will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Sullivan County Healthcare for their wonderful care of Tommy during his residency. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
