For the next 10 years, more than $675 billion annually, in more than 65 federal programs, will be allocated to New Hampshire based on your response to the U.S. Census.
These include programs that directly help our most vulnerable residents: Medicare Part B, Medicaid, Meals-on-Wheels, First Responders, Elderly Housing grants, Food Assistance programs, Fuel Assistance, school lunch programs, and special education.
Beginning soon – in mid-March – every household will be contacted by the U.S. Census, either by mail, by a form dropped off at the door, or by a personal visit, inviting your response. This is a process required by the U.S. Constitution once every 10 years, so your answers will impact your community and your neighbors for the next decade.
In addition to the traditional mail-in short census form, you will also be able to respond by calling your response in, or, for the first time in history, by responding online. Whichever way you choose to respond, it is important to respond, and to include everyone in your household!
In particular, the Census Bureau has noted that historically, some communities “self-respond” at lower rates than others. In Sullivan County, these would include both Claremont and Newport – the two largest communities in the county.
When you respond to the 2020 Census by indicating how many people live in your household – whether you live alone or with others – you are helping to make sure that +funding for these programs in New Hampshire is maximized! It’s safe, easy, and important, and of course, confidential.
