Arline A. Hamel NEWPORT — Arline A. Hamel, 83, passed away peacefully at Sullivan County Nursing Home on March 21, 2020. She was born on March 24, 1936, in Middletown, Nova Scotia, to the late Donald B. and Ruby A. (Butcher) Brooks. Arline moved to Newport at a young age and attended Towle High School. She married her husband, Kenneth Hamel, in 1953 and they shared 65 years together before his death in 2018. Arline and Kenneth owned and operated three local restaurants during their lives, Sam’s Pizza, Steak n Stuff, and Chubba’s. She enjoyed gardening and traveling, especially trips to Maine with her husband. Arline is predeceased by her parents and by a son, Bruce Hamel. Surviving family members include her children, Lynn Maskell and her husband, Bill, of North Newport, Debra Pevine and her husband, Michael, of Barefoot Bay, FL; Gregory Hamel and his significant other, Angela Whittemore, of Newport; Mitchell Hamel and his wife, Fran, of Concord; Elyse Downey and her husband, Chris, of Franklin; Letitia Hamel and her significant other, Chris, of Hillsboro; sister, Dawna Jangel and her husband, Victor, of Claremont; sisters in law, Joyce Disa and her husband, Tony; and Barbara Gouin; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A graveside service will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport at a later date. Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
