Arthur C. Leavitt

Arthur C. Leavitt NEWPORT — Arthur C. Leavitt, 99, of Pine Street Newport, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2020. He was born in Croydon, New Hampshire, on Aug. 20, 1920, son of Herbert G. and Georgia (Phelps) Leavitt. He was educated in Newport, graduating from Towle High School in the Class of 1939. He was employed at the Brampton Woolen Co. as a foreman, later was a salesman for L. Leibowitz Wool Stock Co., of New York City, represented Kemp & Chapman Machine Tool and Smith Machine of Guild. He operated Leavitt Roofing with his son until his employment with Sturm Ruger, at which time the business was turned over to his son. When he retired from Sturm Ruger he then went to work for his son. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, and he played on the last Newport Town baseball team, and other baseball and softball teams. He joined the Newport National Guard when it was federalized in 1940, going to Texas for one year. He was then drafted into service (Army), going to Africa, Italy, Corsica and back to Italy serving in World War II, and honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of staff sergeant. He was very active in the South Congregational Church as a deacon, trustee, usher and member since 1935. He enjoyed motorcycling and spent most of his touring time with three friends traveling through 48 states and nine provinces of Canada with about 145,000 miles traveled. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping with family at White Lake State Park and skiing. He was a supervisor of the checklist, town Republican chairman and for 16 years served on the Board of Supervisors of Sullivan County Soil Conservation District and chairman. He was an avid Red Sox fan. You could always find him at volleyball, basketball, softball and baseball games that his grandchildren were involved in. He is survived by his children, Debra (Leavitt) and Robert Hurd; Linda (Leavitt) and Bruce Rice; Bradley and Jessica Leavitt; Darlene (Leavitt) and David Paige; and Lorilee (Leavitt) Moore. He has 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Leavitt) Quigley; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of South Congregational Church, 20 Church Street, Newport, NH 03773. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
