Claremont Senior Center News: May 9, 2020

We have one main topic for our letter this week: the Claremont Senior Center. We have cha-chaed and talked about gems. But, of course, our favorite topic is the Center. This gives us a chance to brag a little.

First, a public service announcement. There will be a blood drive at the Center on Friday, May 15 from noon to 5 p.m. Blood is considered liquid gold right now-so many needs. Please, donate if you can. Call 1-800-Red-Cross or online at www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/donation-time for an appointment.

The Center was started as a vision and has become a positive asset for our area seniors today. It is open to anyone 50 years and older. We realize you may shudder at the thought of joining a senior center before you retire or are 65, but we do have whole bushel of activities that will whet your appetite.

As the years went by, the amount of members grew. Thus, the need for more programs. More were added to accommodate a variety of tastes. Today, we are really “tasty” and growing. Fund raising is a vital part and a necessity for us as we receive no government or city support (grants are applied for but with no guarantee the applications will be accepted). We have been so blessed with generous donations from members and non-members to keep us going. Oh, by the way. If your dues are due, please mail your payment in. We would hate to see your name on the inactive list!

As we mentioned, we are always looking for something new for our seniors to do. Please take note of these “cabin fever” links. Explore the world on these live cams at explore.org..Visit places such as the African savanna water hole or watch polar bears. If museums are your fancy, start with Google. Select arts and culture. Explore over 2,000 museums worldwide. Learn a new language at Duolingo where more than 30 languages are offered. If science is your love, try 4Science. There you will find the Montshire Museum, Vt. Institute of Natural History, Fairbanks and ECHO. Share your finds with other friends. Let them know you found out about these at the Center.

We are still offering delicious take-outs every Tuesday and Thursday. Please call by 10:30 a.m. to reserve because we often sell out. Pick-up is from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Members are $4, nonmembers are $5. It is our pleasure to serve you. Thanks to all those who have made donations. It helps keep our kitchen going.

Menu for the week:

Tuesday, May 12 (Happy Mother’s Day!)

Bourbon chicken, rice and vegetable dessert.

Thursday, May 14

Salisbury steak, homemade baked beans, coleslaw and dessert.

Our Turkey Dinner take-out will be Saturday, May 23 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. As always, a complete Roast Turkey Dinner with all the fixings will be prepared for you. Please call (603)543-5998 prior to 4 p.m. on Saturday to reserve a guaranteed dinner. Adults are $10, children 10 and under are $6. A great meal you don’t have to cook!

So, we have been talking about a variety of programs available at the Center. As you can see, food is available. Let’s see what else is here for you. Group cribbage, pool, knitting, puzzles, library, chess, senior bingo, cards (such as hand and foot), Mexican dominoes, mahjongg, ping pong, exercise, concerts and two fun game nights are all free. We are always looking at new programs. Make a suggestion. Upcoming fundraisers include the Spring Fling Craft Fair, Gigantic Penny Sale, Winter Fling Craft Fair, Vendor’s Expo, Annual Car Show, Rentals and catering. Woohoo!

When we open again, try our “one month free” trial membership. You will be able to experience these activities for yourself.

Thought for the Week:

The greatest thing in life is to be loved. Even greater is to love.

I guess you can tell how much we love our Center and serving seniors. Have a good week everyone. We miss you all terribly!

Our halls await your laughter and lively conversation. See you soon.
