The Newport Rotary Club recently decided to cancel its 11th Annual Penny Sale. The Penny Sale was originally scheduled to be held on May 9, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the club decided to postpone the Penny Sale until October. With the uncertainty of the pandemic continuing and the great amount of work that needs to be done to prepare for the Penny Sale, the club has decided to cancel this year’s event. Proceeds from the Penny Sale are given back to the community primarily to three major beneficiaries. It was a tough decision to make, but Newport Rotary relies on the generosity of local businesses to help raise funds and the general public to attend the event and have fun. Newport Rotary felt that it could not ask businesses, many who are struggling to get by, to donate items and then risk the health of 250-300 attendees at the Penny Sale. We will be back at it for next year’s Penny Sale in May. In the meantime Newport Rotary hopes everyone will continue to be smart, safe and healthy during this pandemic and follow the Rotary motto of “service above self.”
