LANGDON — Myles Cooney’s Sunapee Lakers walked off the field as champions last year and stepped onto the pitch this season looking every bit as good by blasting out of the gates for a 3-1 win over Fall Mountain in the season opener for both teams.
“This is the only sport I play so it meant the world to me to start the season and play well” said Sunapee striker Brynn Smith.
With the wind at their backs the Lakers were the aggressors for most of the day with pressure coming from all angles of the field. Smith would put Sunapee ahead with goals in the first half and early in the second half giving Sunapee a 2-0 lead. Morgan Beaureguard’s goal would cut the Laker lead to 3-1 after Elizabeth Tschudin plowed through a wall of Fall Mountain defenders only moments after Smith’s second goal.
As Sunapee used the wing play of Sophie Hubert and Smith, it opened up the middle third of the field that allowed 100 goal scorer Abby Pollari and Tschudin lanes to break toward net as the visitors outshot Fall Mountain 18-3 on the day.
“I thought we did what we had to today, we spaced ourselves out and worked the sidelines and kept our shape all game long, I was pleased with the outcome, we came ready to play,” Cooney said.
Three Fall Mountain seniors were introduced prior to the start of the game and they included Kyla Eigabroadt, Sarah Murdoch and Beaureguard. The Fall Mountain team wore masks all game while Sunapee did not.
“It was a good start despite the score and I thought we kept our shape and didn’t quit, we did a lot of things well but Sunapee is a quality team, they’re not state champions for no reason” said Fall Mountain head coach Bruce Ferland.
