Sununu enacts emergency ban on some fires during drought

Gov. Chris Sununu issued a proclamation Friday after getting approval from the Executive Council. The emergency ban will remain in place until conditions improve.

Some other categories of also are prohibited, like smoking a pipe, cigar or cigarette in or near public woodlands or on public trails.

Fire departments have been fighting remote fires across the reason, and any open flame poses a danger at this time, officials say.

Those who violate the rules can face warnings or fines up to $1,000. And anyone who starts a wildfire can be charged for the cost of putting it out.
