WINDSOR, Vt. — An unrelenting Yellow Jackets controlled tempo kept White River Valley on their heals for much of today’s match during a 2-1 home opening win for Windsor.

“We try to use a high press style and today our midfield really took charge of the game” said Windsor head coach Jeff Bachey after Thursday’s contest.

With players and fans masked and adhering to state wide rules, action was fast paced as Windsor controlled play for long stretches of time. Evelyn Page, Morgan McKeen and Holly Putnam anchored the middle third of the field for Windsor and kept the visitors near the sidelines. Windsor’s Adi Prior had some cupcake saves in net while Fiona Vaillancourt was busy in her goal. Elliot Rupp looked to add to her 4 goals in the opening game but her foot wasn’t on target as her shots had the speed but whistled wide on a couple of early attempts while White River Valley just flooded the goal area with up to 8 players at times.

“I think we were a bit frustrated in the first 40 [minutes] today,” Bachey said. “We had some great looks but just ended up missing wide.”

After Rupp was stoned on a breakaway attempt, a corner kick play worked to perfection for Windsor. Rupp short kicked to Page who slid it back to Rupp who floated it toward the goal area and into a pile of players. That short play sent White River Valley scurrying to mark players as Kate Murphy and McKeen stayed in the goal box. After a bit of ping pong action, McKeen pounded a shot that found the far corner to give Windsor a 1-0 lead into the half.

“I don’t remember how I hit it but it felt good when I did” said McKeen after the game.

After a quiet 37 minutes of second half soccer, Page blasted one in from 20 yards to double Windsor’s score but 20 seconds later Amara Calhum-Flowers answered right back with a funny goal but it went in with less than two minutes left as the visitors pushed 10 players over midfield. Kansas Marsh stomped out any White River Valley thoughts of another tally with a clear out of the zone for Windsor and capped a great game from her mid back position.

“We had great energy today against a solid White River Valley team,” Bachey said. “We kept wide and let the space allow passes into the alleys for some good looks at net. It feels good to be 2-0 but we need to get better in all aspect of our game.”
