Local Roundup: Mount Royal wins 6-0 on Senior Night

By Staff Report
On Senior Night, the Lady Knights improved to 2-2. Mount Royal Academy was on the offensive for most the match, out-possessing and out-chancing the visiting Holy Family Academy, who are launching their first varsity season in the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) as Annie Sweet paced the Knights with three goals and one assist.

“We played with better pace at home and were very eager to watch the seniors take the field together in front of their families,” said Coach Derek Tremblay. “We stuck with those seniors for most the game, and the bench was excited to cheer them on. It was fun to see them seeing each other out there, moving the ball and putting the ball on net all night.”

Joining Sweet in the scoring action on Thursday were Rosie Treece, Grace McMenaman and Siena Regan, while Amya Acevedo registered three saves in goal.

The Knights return to action next Tuesday versus Newport at home.

Here is this week’s local roundup of competitive athletics:

Sunapee remains undefeated with 2-1 win over Stevens

SUNAPEE — The Sunapee Lakers (4-0) hosted the Stevens Cardinals (1-4) on Wednesday with the Cardinals starting the excitement 19 minutes into the game. Kaeden Leclair scored by placing a ball that was served across the goal mouth into the back of the net. Sunapee did not give up and at the 28-minute mark junior center back Andrew Claus stepped up and hammered a blistering shot from 30 yards out to tie things up. A minute later, senior Parker Reed chipped in a shot over the Stevens keeper from outside the 18 yard line putting the Lakers ahead 2-1 to stay.

In the second half there were a few more chances for both sides but the score held. The Cardinals pushed the ball and brought the attack but the Laker defense played very well to turn them back.

Windsor scores both goals in 2-0 win against Rivendell

WINDSOR, Vt. — The undefeated Yellow Jackets (3-0) were focused from the first whistle despite the rain and did a great job switching fields and playing the final ball through the defense to get good opportunities on net. Rivendell’s keeper was solid making 14 saves on 19 shots. Windsor goals were scored by Elliot Rupp (assisted by Evelyn Page and Adi Prior) and Olivia MacLeay (assisted by Evelyn Page). Adi Prior was in goal for Windsor and had two saves. Windsor had 10 corner kicks to Rivendell’s zero.

Bellows Falls blanks Keene, 5-0

WESTMINSTER, Vt. — The Terriers hosted Keene tonight in field hockey and remain undefeated after a 5-0 trouncing. Ashlin Maxfield scored the first goal in the first quarter at the 4:47 mark. Then in the second quarter Maya Waryas scored two more with Max knocking in her second of the day with 1:03 left. There was 16 seconds left in the third for Maya to get her third for the day.

Keene did a great job of anticipating the pass and cutting to the ball but couldn’t find the back of the net. Bellows Falls had a much better start to the game than they did Wednesday against Hartford with more aggressive play early. Jules McDermid and Ella Clark had a great game today, keeping the ball moving up the field to Grace and Grace and the rest of the forward line.

The Terriers host always tough Burr and Burton at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Lakers complete 2-0 series against Cardinals

The Lakers travelled to Claremont for the second leg of a home and away series. In the last outing, the Lakers came out on top in a very close 2-1 game. But Friday night was a different story.

The game started out pretty similar to the first match. Parker Reed had two goals in the first half and Stevens scored to make the score 2-1. The same score at halftime.

In the second half, the Lakers picked it up a notch and scored four goals. The Cardinals earned one as well and the final score was 6-2.

Parker Reed completed a hat trick on a direct kick from 20 yards. Drew Nichols scored his first goal of the season and Eric Nangeroni sealed the deal with two goals in the last five minutes of the game. Jackson Cooney had an assist and freshman Sam Kress had two assists.

The Lakers will host Mascoma on Monday at 10 a.m.
