NEWPORT — On a perfect Saturday homecoming, Newport Athletic Director Jeff Miller did everything possible to have a memorable day. After the parade through the middle of town, there was a $1,000 raffle, a great national anthem sung by the Newport chorus, a halftime show with the Newport band under the direction of Emma Forrest and Shep doing play by, the only thing missing were fireworks.

Those were provided by the Newport football team on the field as they exploded for big play after big play to manhandle visiting Monadnock in font of a great crowd.

“Our plan was to pound, pound and pound the ball today and we did a great job of it,” said Newport head coach John Proper.

The game was full of big plays and after stopping the Huskies on a fourth down attempt, the first highlight came from Josh Sharron as he scooped up a loose ball and raced 20 yards to pay dirt to give the Tigers a lead that held up into the second quarter. Justin Joslyn blasted his way in for a score for the Huskies as Joslyn was a load all day with over 100 yards of offense on some hard nose rushing giving the visitors an 8-6 lead.

The next big play for Newport came on the breakaway speed of Sharron with his 42-yard run that set up a touchdown by Marius Edwards to make it 14-8 and the Tigers were on their way. Bryuce Willey recovered a fumble and again it was Sharron with a 33 yard scamper and when Jagger Lovely busted his way into the end zone it was 18-8 and Newport was cruising. “We wanted to be a physically dominant team today and I think we were and the line was just overpowering on both sides of the ball for us today” said Lovely.

On the next series, Tiger tackle Adriano Urisata just blew up a Husky drive as Monadnock was forced to go to the air. Tanner Proper took advantage of the control of the line and picked off a pass setting up the longest play of the day. An Edwards hand off to Lovely sweeping right saw day light and raced 72 yards for another score. On the very next Husky possession, it was Lovely again who recovered a fumble that shut down the Huskies as Newport led at the half 26-8.

“This was the best four quarters of football we’ve played all season, bet we’re not done yet,” said Proper after the game.

Newport wasn’t done yet against Monadnock either as Edwards rumbled for 57 yards after a great block by T. Proper on the edge. Devyn Heino ran up the gut and 37 yards later was standing in the end zone as Newport’s lead grew to 41-8 before Nate Doyle connected with Zion Campbell down the right sidelines for the final scoring on the day giving Newport a 41-14 victory.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team today, they stepped it up and gave it 100%” J. Proper said.

Newport’s win combined with a Stevens thrashing of Fall Mountain on Friday sets up a huge game next Saturday when the Cardinals will take the short ride to Newport for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
