Mount Royal grabs revenge win

The Knights returned home on Tuesday to face the Newport Tigers. In another evenly matched competition, the Knight were able to muster a 1-0 victory.

Much of the action was back-and-forth throughout the game as both teams had their chances to score but came up empty.

The Knights were without two of their key starters but the bench was able to pick up the play. A second group featuring mainly underclassmen entered the match in the first half and provided much needed intensity.

Susan Kanu did all she could do on the back line to stop the relentless attack of Newport’s best striker, Riley Skarin.Annie Klucinec scored the only goal which deflected off three Newport defenders before it just barely entered the net.

Amya Acevedo had to put her body on the line to save several last minute chances by Newport and the Knights back line were able to clear out what looked like an empty net opportunity.

The Knights will travel to Epping on Friday to conclude the regular season before travelling to Hinsdale next Tuesday to open up the Division IV playoffs.

Sunapee gains 1-0 victory over Fall Mountain

Goals were hard to come by this afternoon. Sunapee had a bunch of chances but it took 64 minutes to find the back of the net. Jackson Cooney crossed a leading pass to Sam Kress who skated it past the Fall mountain keeper for the only goal. Cooney also had a beautiful header shot that hit the post off a corner early in the half and the Sunapee defense did a fine job keeping Fall Mountain’s offense at bay. The collective job by the Sunapee keepers earned the sixth shutout of the season.

Sunapee (8-1) will play its last regular season game at Mascoma (5-4) on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sunapee shuts down the Wildcats, 3-0

Sunapee played well enough to win on senior night with a 3-0 victory over Fall Mountain on Wednesday.

The Lakers struggled to make good decisions in the last third most of the night. The footing played a role as Sunapee held possession for most of the game above the slick final 1/3 of the field, only to hit balls over the net and miss-kick.

“Things just were not clicking. But I credit the kids for fighting through it.”

Fall Mountain played hard and deserve credit for keeping us off the board the entire first half despite 10 shots on frame (26 for the day) including 10 corner kicks over the 80 minutes. Fall Mountain plays a defensive scheme and they played hard” said Laker head coach Myles Cooney. All of Sunapee’s goals came in the second half as Brynn Smith scored (assist to Abby Pollari), LIz Tshcudin scored (assist Abby Pollari), and Sophie Bourque scored (Assist to Brynn Smith). Abby Pollari opened the scoring on a feed from Fiona Nolan, and she scored again just before the half after collecting a booming punt from Miah Hamm, who had her best game of the season turning away nine shots on frame.

“Miah has come a long way and we are all very proud of her effort tonight,” Cooney said.
