James Parker Currier

James Parker Currier SUNAPEE — James Parker Currier died on Oct. 25, 2020, peacefully in his home, surrounded with love, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He valiantly participated in many experimental programs that will hopefully someday lead to a cure. Jim was born on Leap Year, 1944. Son of Stanley and Helen Currier, he grew up on a dairy farm in Landaff, New Hampshire. He attended Blue School, the area’s one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1962. From there, he continued his education at Keene State College where he and the lifelong friends he made there had escapades that would be the fodder of stories for decades to come. He graduated from KSC in 1966 with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. During summers, he enjoyed working at Franconia State Park and hiking in the White Mountains. A teacher then and to his children always, he taught at Newport Middle High School for three years before taking a brief hiatus to join his soon-to-be wife in California. Jim married Cynthia Clare Mulcahey on Dec. 20, 1969, in Manhattan Beach. In their 50 years of marriage, they raised two daughters and built a home on Otter Pond that, to this day, welcomes friends old and new. Jim and Cyndy traveled to beautiful places, always enjoying meeting new people. After 17 years of teaching in Newport with wonderful colleagues, Jim started his own construction company. He also served the community he loved in many volunteer capacities. For the town of Sunapee, he was a firefighter, library trustee, and a member of the school board, the water and sewer commission, and Lions Club. He was an avid fan of the Sunapee Lakers and served many a burger or hot dog to players or fellow fans on the baseball field he helped raise money to build. He had many hobbies, including ice hockey, cooking and woodworking. The legacy of his craftsmanship can be seen in the circulation desk he built for the Abbott Library and in the skills he passed on to his daughter, Lindsay, and her husband, Shawn, and his granddaughters in his workshop. He was always a teacher at heart. He was adored not only by his children and grandchildren, but also by their friends, as well. His warm smile, quick wit, vivacious spirit and love of a good time made him a joy to be around. He will be remembered and celebrated by his wife, Cyndy; daughter and son-in-law Meagan and Jeff Reed and their daughters, Molly and Emma; daughter and son-in-law Lindsay and Shawn Walkinshaw and their daughters, Katie and Elle; nieces and nephews; and friends of all ages. He was a loving, kind, generous and fun husband, Dad and Papa who always made sure his family knew how much they were loved. There will an outdoor celebration of his life on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at 9 a.m. on Memorial Field at Sunapee Middle High School, 10 North Road, Sunapee, New Hampshire. In an abundance of caution, we ask everyone to wear masks; once standing in socially-distanced pods, masks may be removed. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to Lake Sunapee VNA Hospice, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257; or the Sunapee Lions Club, P.O. Box 209, Sunapee, NH 03782.
