Robert W. “Red” Marshall

Robert W. “Red” Marshall WINDSOR, Vt. — Robert William “Red” Marshall, 90, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, Nov. 18, 2020, at Genesis Eldercare Facility in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He was born June 20, 1930, in Waterbury, Vermont, the son of Merle and Ada (Perkins) Marshall. He attended school for the first few years in Waterbury Center until his family moved to the Windsor area when his father went to work in the local machine shops. He went to school in Hartland, North Hartland and Cornish before his family finally settled in Windsor. He graduated from Windsor High School in 1948 and shorty after enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Red was sent to the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion School in Port Hueneme, California, where he received a Certificate of Achievement in 1949 for his training with gas, diesel, chassis and engine repair. Following his first honorable discharge, he participated in an auto mechanics testing program of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. He received certificates in four separate categories. Red married Marilyn J. Montgomery on Aug. 19, 1951, in Windsor. When the Korean conflict started, Red was recalled to the Navy CB’s and served two more years while Marilyn stayed in Windsor. When he returned after his honorable discharge from the Navy, he and Marilyn built a house on County Road in Windsor, where they raised their two daughters. Red worked for a short time with the boring mills and drills at Cone Automatic Machine Co. in Windsor. Over the next 17 years, he worked as a mechanic and body man, first at Brown’s Sales and Service from 1957 to 1972 and then at Davis Brothers Garage, both in Windsor. He took a position as a machine maintenance mechanic at Tampax Inc. in Claremont, New Hampshire, for four years before returning to automotive work with his good friend, Bud Richards, at Richards Garage. Over the years, Red made many loyal and appreciative friends who often brought their vehicles to him even after he retired. From the time his girls learned to drive, little pleased him (or them) more than to provide each of his daughters with a vehicle and to do the work to keep them serviced. He was a very helpful and caring Dad. Red, Marilyn and the girls enjoyed camping, starting with a small canvas tent and progressing to a 31-foot travel trailer which he and Marilyn enjoyed during their retirement months in Florida and throughout the South. Red’s favorite sports were league bowling and waterskiing with his girls. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, advancing from a small 250cc to his 1,500cc newest style Goldwing which he and Marilyn rode across the country. Red is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of 69 years; two daughters, Paula D. LeDoux of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Leita Ondre and her husband, Joseph, of Derry, New Hampshire; three granddaughters, a grandson, one great-granddaughter and three great-grandsons, all of Derry, New Hampshire; as well as many nieces and nephews. There will be no services at this time. Condolences may be made to his family at an online guest book at www.knightfuneralhome.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Vermont Chapter, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Williston, VT 05495; or the Arthritis Foundation, 257 South Union St., Burlington, VT 05401. The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor has been entrusted with arrangements.
