Recount confirms Vermont House Speaker Johnson election loss

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A recount held Friday confirmed that Vermont Democratic House Speaker Mitzi Johnson lost her re-election bid earlier this month to a Republican newcomer.

After the Nov. 3 election Johnson was in third place in a two-person district representing Grand Isle in the Legislature. She was 18 votes behind the second-place finisher.

The top vote-getter in the district was Republican Rep. Leland Morgan. Replacing Johnson in the Statehouse in January will be Michael Morgan, the nephew of Leland Morgan.

After two other contenders dropped out the race to become the next speaker of the House the top candidate to replace Johnson as speaker is Democratic Rep. Jill Krowinski, who has served in the House since 2012.

The House will elect the new speaker on Jan. 6 one of the first acts of the 2021 session of the Vermont Legislature.
