St. Andrew’s Church in New London and Epiphany Church in Newport are marking the winter solstice on Monday in two very different ways.
People will gather near the gazebo on Newport Common at 5pm for the Annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Vigil.
“The ceremony will be shorter than usual, but we’ll remember by name all those homeless people who died in New Hampshire in 2020,” MacLeod said. “It’s one of the few events on our church calendar that can go ahead safely, as all participants will wear masks and keep physical distance. As we remember those who are homeless on the darkest night of the year, there’s something about coming together by candle light that lifts us up in hope. ”
At 7 p.m., people are invited to join an online celebration of the solstice called “Yule: Light on the longest night of the year.” Kathy Lowe Bloch is featured, as is the videography of her husband, Peter.
Jack Barben of Newport coordinated the music for the production.
“Yule celebrates the rhythms of creation and how our own spirits can operate in synch with the natural world,” Barben said.
Details of the homeless vigil and of the solstice celebration can be found on the website of St. Andrew’s, New London at standrewsnl.org.
