Block fell through Joe’s Pond ice Saturday, signaling spring

DANVILLE, Vt. (AP) — Spring has arrived in a northeastern Vermont community where a cinder block fell through the ice at Joe’s Pond in West Danville.

Each year people buy tickets to guess when that will happen in the annual Joe’s Pond Ice Out Contest.

This year, the block went through the ice disconnecting a clock at 4:57 p.m. on Saturday.

Over 10,000 tickets were sold but the winner has not yet been announced.

According to the Joe’s Pond Association, the contest was started in the 1980s due to cabin fever.
