Margery E. Miles

Margery E. Miles CONCORD — Margery E. Miles died on April 8, 2021, in Concord, New Hampshire, one month in advance of her 82nd birthday. Margery was born on May 8, 1939, the only child of the late Elbridge and Della Austin Miles, and grew up on a small farm on Loverin Hill in Croydon, New Hampshire. She attended the little red brick schoolhouse in the East Village through eighth grade and attended Towle High School in Newport, graduating in 1957. After one year of commercial studies at Pierce College in Concord, she began work at Phoenix Insurance Co. on Pleasant Street and was known as the “Voice of Phoenix” for her pleasant manner of answering the phone. She retired in 2007 after 48 years with the company. Throughout her life, Margery visited with special friends in Croydon and Newport and attended many local events such as the dedication of the Pat Sawyer Park in Croydon and the town’s 250th celebration. She also did some travelling with friends, including Washington, DC, Disneyworld and Lake George, New York. She especially enjoyed a bus ride to a concert in Lowell, Massachusetts, featuring her favorite country singer, Loretta Lynn, and having her name announced honoring her birthday. After retirement, being settled in her apartment home on Federal Street, she stayed on in Concord and until very recently, she enjoyed walking and shopping uptown, downtown and out to the mall, the library and Main Street events. There will be a brief graveside service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2021, in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport, New Hampshire, but due to the continuing COVID-19 situation, there will be no insider gathering at this time. Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home of Newport, New Hampshire, is in charge of arrangements. Hopefully, a “We Remember Margie” memorial will happen later this summer when it seems safe for people to gather again. If you are interested in attending such an event, please provide contact information to Newton-Bartlett, telephone: 863-2113 and you will receive notice of a date and time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Croydon Historical Society, 879 NH Route 10, Croydon, NH 03773.
