Robert J. Vashel

Robert J. Vashel HANOVER — Robert Joseph “Bob” Vashel, 86, passed away on Jan. 26, 2021, at Wheelock Terrace where he spent the last year living with, and enjoying, friends and an amazing staff. Bob was born on Aug. 8, 1934, in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. He was the only child of the late Joseph and Helen (Borkowski) Vashel. Bob graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1952, where he was a member of the basketball and football teams. He served proudly in the U.S. Navy as a Seebee from 1954 to 1956, where he enjoyed visiting other countries and experiencing their cultures. After the service, Bob worked for New York Telephone and New England Telephone for 34 years. During retirement, he was on the maintenance crew at Baker Hill Golf Course in Newbury. Until recent years, he rarely missed his high school reunions and he loved to dance, especially the polka. In 1966, Bob and his family moved to their favorite vacation spot, Lake Sunapee in Newbury, New Hampshire, where he owned and operated Chalet Hill Cottages until 1998. From 1978 to 1982, he was also the co-owner and operator of Blodgett Landing Marina. Although Bob moved from New York to New Hampshire, he remained an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Giants and Knicks. Over the years, Bob was an active member of the Newbury Volunteer Fire Department, Newbury Harbor Club and the Lions Club of Hanover. He is survived by his four children, Linda Vashel of Newbury, New Hampshire, Kim Hankins (sons Drew and Patrick) of Newbury, New Hampshire, Steven Vashel and Catherine (sons Ethan and Cole) of Guilford, Connecticut, and Thomas Vashel and Sarah (sons Sullivan and Callahan) of Norwich, Vermont; as well as his nieces, Arleen (Webb) Gosselin of Hooksett, New Hampshire, and Pamela (Webb) Hennessey of Pembroke, New Hampshire. There will be a graveside service at a future date in Lakeside Cemetery in Newbury. To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.chadwickfuneralservice.com.
