Stevens head baseball coach Paul Silva was treated to a surprise gathering after recording his 100th win last week on the road.
“We had planned this for a bit earlier but the rain pushed back for our first home game to be able to recognize Paul,” said Stevens High School Athletic Director Doug Beaupre. “Paul has been nothing but a class act for Stevens and we’re very happy to be able to celebrate this milestone here tonight.”
The always humble Silva always heaps praise on his players and was quick to give the attention to the players who made this possible.
“I’ve had so many great kids and they are the reason for this and I’m just grateful to be able to have coached here for so long,” Silva said.
Silva began his head baseball coaching career at Stevens in 1996 and there were some lean years as the Cardinals played in Division 2 which was loaded with good teams. With a declining school enrollment and wins hard to come by, Stevens settled in Division 3 for 10 years until they were pushed back into Division 2 a couple of season ago as the smallest school in that division.
“Wins were hard to come by for a few seasons, but as the program began to get stronger we started to grab some wins,” Silva said. “I’ve been around a while so I guess I was bound to grab a win or two along the way.”
