NEWPORT — The undefeated Newport softball team just keeps on winning as they cruised past Fall Mountain on Friday.
Jenna Maheu led the Tigers with a 6-for-6 performance as Newport jumped out to a 20-0 first inning lead as 25 batters came to the plate. with a walk. Tanya Sanchez’s home run opened the flood gates for Newport as Maheu, Katie Sharon joined Samchez with RBIs in the opening frame for Newport. The Tigers will look to extent their unbeaten streak when they face Stevens for the game of the year in the Sunshine town for a day night double header at 3:30 p.m. then head to Claremont for a game under the lights at 7 p.m.
Coming off a 17-1 win over Mascoma on Thursday, the Tigers baseball team’s bats stayed hot and had a 4-3 lead but the Wildcats flipped a switch and ran off a huge six-run fourth inning to grab a lead.
“We were doing everything we wanted to but with our third game this week, our pitching wore down,” said Newport head coach Jay Blaine. Fall Mountain didn’t hesitate and took control as Hayden Chandler’s timely hitting was a big reason why Fall Mountain won.
“Once we settled down, we began to make contact and got the hits when we needed,” Chandler said.
Mitch Cormier started on the hill for Fall Mountain while the Tigers went with Tanner Proper who threw almost 100 pitches before handing the ball off. Dom VanLaere Nutting closed out things for Fall Mountain as the Wildcats grabbed a 21-5 win scoring 12 runs in the last two innings.
