SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Springfield High School Track and Field team hosted Woodstock and West Rutland at Gurney Field on Saturday in their fourth home meet of the season.
Woodstock won with 70 points for their women’s team and 65 for their men’s team. Springfield’s women’s team scored second with 50 points and 52 points for their men’s team. West Rutland ended third, scoring 32 points for their women’s team and 40 points for the men’s team.
For the Cosmos men, junior Captain Aidan Donahue won shot put with a best throw of 34 feet, 9 inches. Sophomore Cole Wright placed second with a new personal record of 31 feet, 2 inches. Senior Donavin Sprano won the discus throw with a personal record of 90 feet, 11 inches. He also placed second in the javelin at 114 feet, 5” inches, and third in shot put at 28 feet, 4 inches. Junior Adam Hammerle took fourth in the shot put at 28 feet, 1 inch in his first-ever meet.
Chris Jeffers won the men’s 400m dash, improving his personal record by nearly two seconds to 57.23, and edging out teammate Sam Presch, who also set a personal record of 57.41. Jeffers then placed second in the long jump at 18 feet, 4 inches, and third in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches. Presch also placed second in the 100m dash with a new personal record of 12.52 and anchored the 4x100m relay.
Sophomore Damien Stagner had a big day, placing second in the men’s 800m run, with a five-second personal record of 2.14.30. Stagner also took second in the 1500m, shaving his time down to 5:02.99. Freshman Dylan Magoon placed fifth in the latter race, with a personal record of 5.06.21, and sixth in the 800m at 2.36.63. Junior Timmy Amsden placed fifth in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches, and ran legs of all three men’s relays.
Amsden led off the winning Cosmos 4x800m, passing the baton to Magoon, who passed it to Junior Austin LaPlante, who handed off to anchor Damian Stagner for a time of 10:44.50. In the 4x100m, Jeffers, freshman Marshall Simpson, Amsden and Presch combined to place second in 51.06. Finally, in the 4x400m, Amsden, Simpson, Stagner, and Jeffers ran a 4:19.14 to place second.
On the women’s side, senior Anna Ondre won the high jump with a best of 4 feet, 6 inches, as well as 800m run, where she clocked a personal record of 2.53.40. She also placed fourth in the 100m at 15.62 and ran two relays. Senior Captain Haley Gibbons won the long jump with a jump of 12 feet, 10 inches, placed third in the shot put at 22 feet, 11 inches, and fifth in the javelin at 61 feet, 2 inches. Senior Captain Skyler Congdon placed second in discus with a season record of 72 feet, 3 inches. Senior Chloe Jerman-Brown placed second in 800m run with an senior record of 2:54.59. Junior Alicia Ostrom took second in the 1500m with a personal record of 6:09.01, and third in the 800m with another personal record of 3:00.31. Sophomore Kaylee Newton placed second in the 200m dash at 34.03, third in discus at 58.05, and fourth in shot put at 22 feet, 5 inches. Senior Hannah Dolloff placed third in the 200m (34.90) and sixth in the 100m (15.93). Sophomore Angelina Woychosky placed third in the 1500m at 6:38.52, and sixth in the 800m with a personal record of 3:16.54. Sophomore Gabby Anders took fourth in discus with a throw of 54 feet, 7 inches. Olivia Howard finished fourth in the 1500m (7:08.87) and sixth in discus. Olivia Loney came in fifth in discus with a personal record of 53 feet and sixth in the javelin with an season record of 58 feet, 10 inches. In their first ever competition, JJ Prouty placed fourth in the 200m (35.47); Hailey Sliker fifth (36.08). Both also ran the 100m dash.
In the relays, Springfield women won the 4x800m with a time of 12:03.50 (Ondre, Ostrom, Woychosky, Jerman-Brown), and placed second in the 4x100m at 1:05 (Dolloff, Ondre, Prouty, Gibbons)
“Many of our athletes set personal records that qualified them for States today,” said Cosmos head coach Jim Fog, “and several showed their championship contender status. With 10 days left ‘til States, this team has never looked better!”
Springfield hosts Green Mountain and White River Valley (formerly South Royalton) in their final meet of the regular season, this Saturday at Springfield High School, starting at 10 a.m. The Cosmos will hold a recognition ceremony for seniors and their families during the meet.
