WINDSOR, Vt. — When a pitcher gets the kind of run support that the Windsor bats have been providing, it’s up to the person on the mound to keep the other team in check.
Yellow Jacket hurler Peyton Richardson gave up a single in the first inning to Hartford and no more as she grabbed another complete game win with a one-hit, seven-strikeout shutout performance on Thursday.
“I just try and throw strikes, keep the ball in play and let my fielders make the plays” said the junior.
While the Yellow Jacket (7-3) defense was air tight with Paige Kleefisch and Hannah Wood throwing some leather around on the left side of the infield, the Jacks came out swinging. A first inning grand slam from Mya Harriman flew over everyone in right center field clearing the bases and set the Jacks on their way. Windsor would grab a 12-0 lead after the second inning as everything was going right for Windsor.
Windsor has been putting up huge offensive numbers while outscoring their opponents 71-1 over the last three games and today was no different.
“I was worried about today’s game,” said Windsor head coach Heather Stearns. “We’ve been off for a week and I know that Hartford is an up and coming team.”
Those worries were quickly dashed as the Windsor bats cranked out 8 hits while taking 20 walks by Hartford pitching.
Stevens grad Danielle Tenney took over the Hartford (2-7) softball program last year and is starting from the ground up. With more than half of the team made up of freshman and no pitcher with any high school experience, the Hurricanes are making progress.
“Pressure is positivity,” said Tenney while making zero excuses. “We have a great group of eager players who are learning every time they step on the field and we are adjusting to high school play. I have great expectations for this team.”
Harriman led the offensive show for Windsor with two hits, four RBIs, and four runs scored. Kleefisch bases loaded single gave her three RBIs while Wood and Adi Prior each chipped in with a two-RBI day.
