Theodore M. Fortune COLUMBIA, S.C. — Theodore Marvin Fortune, 73, passed away in Columbia, South Carolina, on Feb. 16, 2021, where he had lived for many years. Ted was born in New London, New Hampshire, on May 13, 1947, the son of Rachel Fay Fortune and Ted Reginald Fortune. He grew up in Sunapee, New Hampshire, where he graduated from Sunapee High School. Ted is survived by his partner, William Johnson,; his sister, Sylvia Haley; his first cousins, Maryanne Benoit, Gregory and Linda Fortune, and many other cousins in the Hancock, Fortune and Wright families. Ted joined the U.S. Marine Corps and made it his career, ending as a Staff Sergeant. He had studied music from a young age and later attended the college where he took culinary arts courses. Ted was an accomplished pianist with a trained tenor voice. He started singing as a youngster at Sunapee Methodist Church, and eventually sang in many other choirs in Atlanta and competed in South Carolina. He could always be depended upon to provide the music for family weddings, funerals and other events. Ted had a passion for cooking and became an accomplished chef. He also opened a deli/restaurant in Guild, New Hampshire. Being a multi-talented person, Ted built a campground in Dewey Rose, Georgia, and ran it for many years. Carpentry, plumbing and electrical skills led him to become a contractor and renovator. Ted was always a very caring, compassionate and supportive friend. If someone needed help, he would be there. He also volunteered in his church and community to help those less fortunate. Ted and his laughter will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
