NEWPORT — A project that began on Tuesday, June 15, is moving along with incredible progress being made.

A move to consolidate fields to the high school will include a field hockey and soccer fields adjacent to the football field. Along with game fields being relocated, the practice field near the basketball courts have been upgraded with more loam and sod installation expected next week.

Newport School District’s maintenance’s Dave Childs looks forward to a beautiful complex.

“It just looks amazing and feels great to have such nice fields right next to the high school,” Childs said.

New England ProGreen is spearheading the work with United Construction onsite as well with heavy equipment. Not only will there be new playing fields but the track surrounding the football field is getting a new surface as the new black topping was being installed this week.

“Irrigation will be available for the fields plus we’ve extended the fiber optics cable to allow broadcasts for games,” Childs said.

Not only will the fields and track be upgraded, there is a plan to install all the championship banners along with a new flag pole with some help from the Lovely family. Maintenance will be the done by school staff and they expect to have a regulation grass height of 1¾ inches for field hockey games.
