Letter to the Editor: Support S.1 in honor of Granny D

If Doris “Granny D” Haddock (1910-2010) were with us today, she would be demonstrating her support of the For the People Act.

At age 87, “Granny D” walked across the country in support of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act, which passed soon after. In 2003, she drove 22,000 miles around the U.S. registering new voters.

Let us be inspired by her actions for democracy to support the For the People Act currently in the Senate. This bill, S.1, would protect and expand voting rights, stop partisan gerrymandering, create an ethical and accountable government, and reduce the influence of big money in politics.

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan are both supporting the For the People Act but have not committed to reforming or eliminating the filibuster if that is what it takes to get the bill passed next month. I strongly urge Sens. Shaheen and Hassan to commit to doing everything in their power to see that S.1 gets passed now.
