In a story published in the Saturday, Sept. 18, print edition of the Eagle Times titled, “Board votes to end use of ‘Fishtank’ reading series in schools,” it was erroneously reported that Claremont School Board members, in a previous meeting held on July 21, noted that biographical subjects included in the Fishtank Learning reading series used by Claremont schools “sway disproportionately toward people of color and women, with few texts about historically significant white men.” In fact, this was a mischaracterization of the board members’ voiced concerns which stemmed not from the race or gender of historical subjects included or excluded from the reading series, but rather a general concern of significant figures that are excluded from the readings that board members feel should be included in order to provide students with a well-rounded education, such as Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and Colin Powell.
