Local Roundup: Lakers soccer grab huge wins

Staff Report
The Sunapee Lakers boys soccer club had a super homecoming game against an unbeaten Wilton-Lyndeborough.

Sunapee got on the scoreboard in the 17th minute as Vinny Borelli kicked in a rebound from a Rupert Dalton shot.

Wilton-Lyndeborough rallied back in the 34th minute and it stood as 1-1 at the half.

Sunapee caught some momentum in the second half. Center back Andrew Claus intercepted a ball at midfield and made a determined run that ended with a blistering shot that the Wilton-Lyndeborough keeper couldn’t handle. Sophomore forward Sam Kress added an insurance goal to round out the night.

Keeper Jake Galloway had a great night. One of his saves was on a direct kick bent around the wall and was headed for the upper right. Galloway extended a dive to make the save.

“This was a big win for our team,” said coach Jack Iacopino. “It was intense for the whole 80 minutes and the boys dug in and played quality soccer. It showed us what we are capable of.”

The Lakers are now 9-1 on the season. Next week Sunapee travels to Portsmouth Christian (5-5) on Wednesday and host Newmarket (8-3) on Friday.

Windsor 1, Woodstock 0

Gabriella Gilbert scored in the 3rd quarter with 44 seconds left to play on a corner assisted by Karen Kapuscinski and double assist by Peyton Richardson.

Lindsey Young had the complete game in net with no saves.

Windsor field hockey improves to 5-3-1 and hosts Fair Haven on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Smooth sailing for Lakers with 9-0 win

The Sunapee Lakers girls soccer team scored early and often on homecoming weekend, holding possession for long periods of time and hitting the back of the net nine times en route to a homecoming day victory on Alexander Field.

Goals from Brynn Smith (3), Liz Tschudin (2), Sophie Bourque (2), Hannah Laflamme (1) and Clare Tuohy (1) accounted for the scoring.

“In the last three or four games we have played in games where we held a lot of possession,” said coach Myles Cooney. “We worked on scoring and attacking the net from multiple angles, looking ahead it is clear our schedule is about to tighten up.”

The Lakers have won two games against Portsmouth Christian Academy, and games with Concord Christian Academy, Newmarket, and Stevens.

“We lost tough games to Stevens and Newmarket earlier this season, but I liked the way we competed: gritty, determined, and together,” Cooney said. “I like what I have seen from this team, but they need to keep growing to get to the level they hope to get to. I challenged them after this weekend’s game, we will see what they come up with.”

Sunapee (7-2) returns to action Tuesday at Portsmouth Christian Academy (8-2)

Green Mountain had five scores in both halves of the game.

The Bellows Falls’ lone goal by Caleb Ghia tied the game at 23:52 early before Green Mountain scored nine unanswered goals led by four from Everett Mosher.
