Cameron Fry (19), Drew Buswell (14), Jon Grenier (4), and Camden Fuller (4) grabbed second place for the Wildcats edging out Monadnock as Derryfield took honors.
Sunapee 2, Portsmouth Christian Academy 1
The Sunapee Lakers had to battle to the last whistle at Portsmouth Christian Academy (PCA) on Tuesday to earn a 2-1 victory.
“We knew they were a strong team. Just last week they pushed Newmarket to the last whistle, and last year we played them in the semifinal game,” said Sunapee girls soccer coach Myles Cooney. “They play a strong brand of soccer and they play well together.”
Sunapee would score first after several near misses had them scratching their heads. Liz Tschudin would score off a Brynn Smith corner to put the Lakers ahead at halftime as play was 50/50 but Sunapee was getting the strong chances to score.
When play resumed Sunapee played a quick combo thru the middle early in the second half as Liz Tschudin hit Clare Tuohy in stride and Tuohy would chip over the keeper to put the Lakers out in front 2-0. The Lakers looked to be in control as they went to a possession game and started to play well. However, a late goal and a surging PCA midfield had the Lakers playing long ball and clinging to their lead in the closing minutes.
“We have got to give credit to PCA. They played hard and won midfield battles, they consistently overlapped forwards with the outside midfielders, and gave us fits all day,” Cooney said. “Youth and inexperience showed as we started getting to kicking game instead of winning the ball and making good decisions late in the game. But I will say this: everyone contributed to this win. It was a solid team effort. It was a good win on the road, one we needed.”
The Lakers are back in action Friday night at home versus the Newmarket Mules which appear to be the class of the league. The Lakers dropped a one goal game at their place, it should be a dandy.
Windsor 6, Mill River 0
Sophia Rockwood secured her first shutout in goal for Jeff Bachey’s Lady Yellow Jacket soccer team.
Windsor goals were scored by three different players (Elliot Rupp had three, Audrey Rupp two, and Miah McAlliater had one).
“It was a great team win heading into the last half of the season,” Bachey said.
Lakers continue to roll with 5-0 win
The Sunapee boys soccer team travelled to Portsmouth Christian and controlled the play from start to finish.
Hunter Morse scored two goals early in the first half, assisted by Matthew Tschudin and Vincent Borelli. In the second half Sam Kress scored two goals and Eric Nangeroni had one.
The second half goals were assisted by Nangeroni, goalkeeper Jake Galloway, and Mason Sailer.
“I thought we started off slow but came into it as time went on,” said coach Jack Iacipino. “Andrew Claus had another big night as a strong defensive presence.”
Sunapee (10-1) is home on Friday against Newmarket where they will try to avenge their only loss so far this season.
Rivendell 2, Bellows Falls 0
Bellows Falls changed to a formation that gave them a stronger defensive mindset that turned this game into a defensive battle. The Terriers were able to hold Rivendell Academy without a goal for 30 minutes into the first half when they scored off a strong attack.
Caleb Ghia and Ben Perry always do well working as a pair of Center Backs holding a strong line and helping keep the defense solid. Halfway through the second half Bellows Falls conceded another goal. The game ended 2-0 for them, which shows the large improvements that Bellows Falls is making every single game and throughout the season.
“My team always goes out and gives it their hardest and I couldn’t be more proud of that,” said Bellows Falls coach Scott Hansen. “We strive to look back at games knowing that no matter what the score line was, no team was able to break our spirit or determine how hard we work. This game was a perfect scenario for just that. Our young program, with focus and more experience, will become great due to the players’ mentalities more than anything else.”
Stratton Mountain 7, Bellows Falls 0
In the first half it was Stratton’s with two quick goals as the Terriers girls soccer team did their best. Defensively again Terriers worked their hardest led by senior McKenna Bingham.
Freshman Laura Kamel cleared balls left and right. Unfortunately, Stratton would take the half 5-0.
After inspiring words from the Terriers coaches the girls came out stronger in the second half. Juniors Alannah McAllister and Jenna Dolloph led the way with their multiple shots on goal. Stratton continued to play tough not letting anything get by their goalie.
The Terriers continued to hold them off until the end of the second half where Stratton scored two more quick goals.
