Richard Madigan CLAREMONT — Richard Madigan, 80, of Claremont, New Hampshire, passed away on Dec. 13, 2021. He is survived by his two daughters, Colleen Eaton and Shannon Angielski. Richard was born on July 19, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Col. John Joseph Madigan Jr. and Mary Halpin Madigan. As the son of an Army officer, Richard lived in many locations in the United States, as well as in Trieste, Italy, during the reconstruction of Western Europe at the end of World War II, from 1949 to 1953. Richard graduated from Assumption Preparatory School in Worcester, Massachusetts, and received his bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, Vermont. Richard enlisted in the Air Force for four years (1959-1963), serving as a reconnaissance navigator, and was part of the crew that photographed the missiles in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He met his wife, Susan Gregg Madigan (deceased in 2006), in Taunton, Massachusetts, and moved to Proctor, Vermont, where they began raising their two daughters before moving to Claremont in 1981 to start a new job at then-Citibank. He enjoyed being the parent and grandparent (affectionately known as Cuppa or Cuppy, depending on who you talk to) who teased his children and grandchildren, telling silly jokes, watching his grandchildren play sports, gardening and spending time with family. Richard is survived by his brother, Col. Eugene Madigan, and sister, Mary Jane Crouthamel; and his two daughters, Colleen M. Eaton and her husband, John, of Claremont, New Hampshire, and two grandsons, Cullen and Broghan, and Shannon Angielski and her husband, Jeff, and three granddaughters, Sasha, Margaret and Eleanor, of Alexandria, Virginia; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard was predeceased by his brother, Col. John J. Madigan III. Visiting hours will be held at Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Mary Church on Friday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts, on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, 70 Walnut St. Suite 301, Wellesley, MA 02481; or the Alzheimer’s Association, 166 South River Road #210, Bedford, NH 03110.
