SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Springfield’s indoor track and field season finished off with a final demanding two-meet weekend schedule.

“We took Friday off to rest up,” said Coach Jim Fog.

Saturday’s highlights included a Personal Record of 9.65 for sophomore JJ Prouty in the women’s 55m dash, and a throw of 30 feet, 2 inches in shot put for Junior Thomas Czwakiel in his first ever meet.

Sunday Thomas traveled to St. Johnsbury Academy for a throws-only meet. Having never picked up or even seen the implement before, he sent it 28 feet, 5.25 inches to place eleventh out of 18 competitors. Czwakiel also threw the shot 29 feet. Afterward he witnessed an instructive and historic performance by Mt Anthony’s Isaiah Brunache, who set a new Vermont indoor record of 55 feet, 7.75 inches on his third attempt out of four.

Unfortunately, in response to facility time constraints, only the top 18 athletes entered in each running events, and the top 12 in each field event — overall (Division I, Division II, and Club) — will qualify for the combined Vermont State Championships this year. Just who made it will remain unknown until a few days before the meets.

Throwing State Meet will take place at St. Johnsbury on Sunday, Jan. 30, so Thomas and Ari Cioffi on the women’s side should find out next week. Runners won’t know for sure till Friday, Feb. 4, if they are going to UVM that weekend. In the meantime, the Cosmos will rest up and keep practicing.
