PUTNEY, Vt. — Two men from New York are in custody at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield after a resident on Shagg Bark Hill reported an out-of-state vehicle stuck along the roadway late Sunday night.

Authorities responded to Shagg Bark Hill around 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, in response to a call about a U-Haul parked on the side of the road. Upon further investigation, police discovered that the U-Haul rental van, which was being operated by two individuals at the time of the call, was stolen.

Vermont State Trooper Mengbei Wang took both the operator, Michael Peterson, 33, of Brooklyn, New York, and the passenger, Marlon Scott, 36, of Rochester, New York, into custody to the Westminster Barracks.

Scott, who falsely identified himself as a family member in an attempt to impede law enforcement and has an outstanding arrest warrant in the state of New York, and Peterson are both being held on $25,000 bail.
