Local Roundup: Athletes make waves

Two Sullivan County freshman athletes from Stevens and Sunapee put larger schools on notice at the NHIAA Division II swim and dive championships.

Stevens freshman Sara Gaspard grabbed an 8th place finish in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:05.15 (30.19/34.96) then took 14th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.72.

Sunapee freshman Jordon Roosevelt took the 5th spot in the men’s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:35.81 (32.97/40.83/35.38).

Bean, Kelly lead Windsor to 2nd-place Windsor hosted a four-team match between themselves, South Burlington, Fair Haven, and Enosburg on Saturday in Barre, Vt.

Avery Bean rolled a 226 and 134 and the No. 2 ranked bowler in the state Patrick Kelly tossed a 222 and 222 to pace the Yellow Jackets to a solid second-place finish against some elite bowling teams in Vermont.

Windsor took the No. 1 seed after the individual format and would take on No. 4 seeded Enosburg. Alyssa St. Louis’ 160/183 and Bailey Eddy’s 167/ 156 helped Windsor defeat Enosburg in dominating fashion carving out a game one blow out win (203-94) following up with a game two win (135-100) sweeping the hornets two games to zero.

Fair Haven took the No. 2 seed and faced No. 3 seeded South Burlington for the chance to face Windsor for all the marbles. South Burlington would need three games to defeat Fair Haven who needed a spare and strike in the final game to force a roll out however failed to convert the spare leaving the Wolves of South Burlington to move on to face the top seeded Yellow Jackets.

In the final baker match-up on the day, the Wolves would ultimately come out on top taking two games to Windsor’s one with both teams achieving high scores to finish the day. (172-167 South Burlington won, 190-163 Windsor win, 200-185 South Burlington win)

Fair Haven would defeat No. 4 seeded Enosburg hornets to take third place on the day

Windsor travels to Colchester next weekend for an early morning match against the new No. 1 team in the state, the Burlington Seahorses, and the South Burlington Wolves.

FM secures No. 2 seed with win over MascomaFall Mountain defeated the Mascoma Royals 67-34 in Ladies basketball in the Den on Friday.

The Wildcats were led by Avery Stewart’s 23 points and Makenna Gillone’s 15 points. The Royals were led by Maddy LaGasse’s 13 points and Gabby Pierce’s 11 points.

The Wildcats appear to be on a path for yet another rematch with Conant in the championship round which will take place at Keene State College on Sunday, Feb. 27.
